Blue Jays Season Ends In Baltimore Doubleheader Sweep

The Blue Jays were swept in Wednesday's doubleheader in Baltimore, losing 4-2 and 4-2, and the second loss eliminated the defending American League champions from the postseason race. Pete Alonso's 41st home run and Chris Bassitt carrying a shutout into the sixth inning set the tone in the opener, where Toronto went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Trey Gibson pitched Baltimore into the seventh in the nightcap, and CJ Van Eyk took the loss.

The more consequential news came off the field. Right-hander Dylan Cease was placed on the 15-day injured list with shoulder inflammation, ending his season, which turns the offseason conversation away from wild-card arithmetic and toward rotation health heading into next spring.

Toronto is off Thursday. Whatever comes next for this roster gets decided in meetings, not games, starting now.

Runners the Blue Jays left on base in Wednesday's series opener A lineup that strands eight runners and goes 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position isn't unlucky, it's a symptom of an offense that couldn't manufacture the extra run all season. Watch how the front office addresses lineup depth this winter, because a team that strands runners at this rate in a must-win game has a repeatable problem, not a one-night slump.
